FAQs
Grass/Turf
Where do I purchase the grass from? Which grass should I use?
You can place any grass/turf in the puppy potty, however our four (4) default sizes are designed to fit the turf most easily and readily bought, which is from Bunnings and other retailers listed here. They sell it starting at $7 a piece and its excellent quality.
Depending on which state you are in will depend on which size potty you should consider, to be the most precise fit for your turf (i.e. VIC & SA Bunnings sell different size turf to NSW, ACT, QLD & WA).
Please see our turf guide for further info.
Alternatively, you can simply trim your turf to fit whichever potty size you prefer.
Why does Real Grass Puppy Potty not provide the grass?
The quick answer; because we want you to save a FORTUNE! It is much cheaper (up to seven times cheaper) for you to buy it direct from the suppliers who have it readily available. We have always been, and always will be about offering solutions to our customers rather than focusing on maximising profit. Why pay $40-50 for a piece of turf when you can buy it for as low as $7? How long will the grass last before I have to change it?
Best case scenario for green thumbs it grows indefinitely like a normal lawn. We have many customers who have reported their turf has lasted for up to six (6) months, or on average and most commonly around three (3) months. Worst case scenario (such as indoors) the grass on average lasts 2-4 weeks.
Please note that these estimates are averages based off a large amount of customer feedback, and from our own experience. Life of grass can vary (more or less) dependent on many factors and variables, such as how you set the potty up, how often you do or don’t water the grass, where it’s placed (sunlight, rain, indoors, outdoors etc.), how big your dog is and how often they use it, whether you add soil, and how you take care of it in general.
You can see our best tips/recommendations on how to maintain turf here.
I live in the ACT and Bunnings have a slow supply of turf in the winter due to our climate. Can I get turf anywhere else?
Yes, many of our ACT customers during winter use another supplier called ‘CanTurf’, who supply turf all year round, even in the colder months.
Please view our Turf Guide for further information.
Why do Bunnings and other retailers say out of stock when I check online?
Turf is a live plant and without soil it will eventually die. With this in mind, Bunnings and other retailers do not offer online purchasing, unless ordering in bulk.
Individual pieces are sold in-store in their nurseries and to keep it fresh, they have it delivered regularly with a quick turn-over. We recommend calling the store beforehand to check stock levels or time when the next delivery is.
Setup
Which size potty should I order?
The most important factors to consider when purchasing your Real Grass Puppy Potty are:
- How much space is available for your potty.
- How big or small your dog is.
- How many dogs will be using the potty.
- How often your dogs will use the potty (verses doing their business during walks).
You should also consider whether you are happy to trim the turf to fit smaller potties, or whether you’d prefer a more precise / easier fit.
Please check our product pages or turf guide for further info and recommendations, or contact us.
What are the potties made of?
We use high quality timber that is 100% solid, structural pine, certified to Australian construction standards.
How should I set the potty up outside?
We recommend treating it much like a normal lawn or any other plant, which will prolong the life of the grass. This means simply laying something on the base of the potty such as some plastic potty liner (cut some holes in it so it can drain still), and a little bit of potty mix (soil).
Then lay the grass on top. This will allow you to water it with effective draining, flushing the dog’s business away and keeping the grass alive longer!
Your potty will also come with some little rubber feet or wheels to sit on, which further enhances drainage and airflow.
Will the water or liquid draining from the potty damage/stain my surface under the potty?
As long as you water the turf frequently, what drains underneath is similar to just dirty water like any plant would drain. We recommend throwing some water under the potty every few days to keep things fresh though, as with anything!
How should I set the potty up inside?
We recommend following the same setup tips (outlined here), however you should withhold from putting any holes in the plastic potty liner.
We also strongly recommend against watering the turf beyond a gentle surface level misty spray.
Watering the turf, without the ability to drain the excess water, will result in the turf becoming soggy and potentially drowning the root system. This means the turf will no longer be able to absorb and effectively break down the dog’s urine, potentially resulting in a smell.
Will anything leak out of the potty if I place it inside?
The grass will absorb most of the dog’s mess, however we recommend placing a little bit of plastic potty liner on the bottom and a thin layer of soil (potty mix) if you don’t want anything to leak and want it all contained in the box.
The plastic not only keeps it hygienic but also makes it easier and cleaner to change the grass too, whilst the soil makes the grass last much longer.
Do the wheels have breaks on them?
We intentionally use castors, so breaks are not required as castors only slide in one direction; once weight (the turf and soil) is added to the potty it is fairly heavy, so it won’t slide unless you want it to and intentionally move it. We specifically use castors to keep the potty as low profile as possible, as opposed to larger wheels that have breaks on them that make the height of the potty too high for a lot of dogs, albeit young with little legs, or older with mobility issues, we found this is the perfect solution.

Why should I use Real Grass Puppy Potty instead of other options? What are the other options?
1. Grass subscriptions or "one-off" services are costly to set up, mostly made overseas with plastic, and designed for turf that only lasts 1-2 weeks, requiring frequent, expensive replacements—about five times the price of turf from Bunnings or garden centers.
2. Many overpriced, complex systems overwhelm you with information, but finding a safe, comfortable toilet area for your pup is simple and doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive.
3. Artificial grass and puppy pads are unhygienic, difficult to clean, and confuse dogs, delaying toilet training. Real grass is instinctively preferred and easier for dogs to distinguish from other surfaces.
4. Why choose us? Our product is 100% natural, environmentally sustainable, handmade in Australia from pure timber, pre-built, affordable, and it simply works. We are the original behind this concept and have become a trusted and loved brand in Australia, proudly leading the market. We are fuelled by our obsession with our customers rather than maximising profit at the expense of our customer.
